Peroxide-Coated Strips
What they are: Hydrogen-peroxide-coated strips that are applied to teeth twice a day for 30 minutes. "These really do work. Teeth lightly stained by coffee or tobacco can get up to three shades whiter in two weeks," says New York City dentist Lana Rozenberg.

A Who's Who of the city's most sought-after plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and cosmetic dentists.
May 27, 2002
|
Doctor Lookgood
Los Angeles may be the spiritual capital of plastic surgery, but New York's plastic surgeons, dermatologists, treatment centers, and cosmetic dentists are some of the world's best. We've polled cosmetic-surgery consultants, patients, and fellow physicians for names of the top docs in the business -- by no means an exhaustive list, but a compendium of the city's hottest practitioners, their specialties, and some of their best-known clients. Want to look like Julie Christie? Here's who to call.
Lana Rozenberg, 45 W. 54th ST., Ph: 212-265-7724
At Rozenberg's "Dental Day Spa," she not only does laminates and fills cavities (with porcelain rather than amalgam) but will also give you an herbal neck wrap. Her touch is gentle and so are her prices.
Rush to Beauty
At Lana Rozenberg's 54th Street dental office, candles are burning, softening the fluorescent lights, and the New Age track "Songbirds at Sunrise" plays in the background. Medicinal odors are masked by the scents of clove - and cardamom -filled herbal Wraps, placed around the necks of patients to lull them into relaxation. Like so many dentists' practices, Rozenberg's has become increasingly cosmetic; Henri Bendel is even selling her skin cream for the neck and jaw area, and she's working on a lip balm and a candle. "This isn't a regular dentist's office -it's an extension into the next level;' says Rozenberg, an unlikely spa front woman with earth-colored hair wisping at the temples and no makeup to enliven her urban pallor. "We want to offer something more fun than having your teeth poked. I was apprehensive at first; I thought people might find it strange. That's why we included only neck and face treatments. But people really like it-men in particular. They don't say they're going to a spa; they say they're gofug to the dentist."

Celebrities who cozy up to the camera as the flashbulbs pop have given the phrase "megawatt smile" new meaning. Yet even as we criticize the fluorescent-white teeth of Hollywood bigwigs, we also covet them. But no matter how much bleaching and brushing you do, you may never be able to achieve movie star-or even TV star-teeth. "There are very few people on-screen who haven't had their teeth done," says Lana Rozenberg, D.D.S., owner Manhattan's Rozenberg Dental Day Spa. The celebrity secret?

Healthy looks. The natural way to whiten teeth.

No patience for bleaching? There may be another way to get white teeth, and it's as simple as munching on an apple.
"To keep teeth bright and prevent yellowing, you need to remove the staining bacteria," says Lana Rozenberg, D.D.S., a cosmetic dentist in New York. "This is exactly what happens when you chew certain foods that produce a high salivary flow." So, in addition to apples, take a bite out of pears, kiwis, celery, carrots, brocoli, cauliflower and cucumbers.

Put yourself on a "white diet", suggests dentist Lana Rozenberg, founder of New York's Rozenberg Dental Day Spa. "Anything that leaves color on your plate or blouse will do the same to your teeth," she explains. That means stainers like red wine, soy sauce and srawberris. Can't exist without espresso? Learn to love milk-enriched latte. Got the soda habit? Opt for pale drinks like ginger ale. Cut out (or cut down on) smoking. For maintenance, try Crest Whitestrips, worn twice a day for two weeks.

You may not associate scented candles and New Age music with a root canal. But at the Rozenberg Dental Day Spa, in New York City, patients are treated to a hand massage, neck wrap and a cooling eye mask before they even say, "Ah." These days, a growing number of dentists are coming up with innovative ways to relieve people's anxiety about sitting in their chairs. American Dental Association spokesman Matthew Messina says U.S. dentists are also equipping offices with virtual-reality headsets and TVs. The trend isn't just an exercise in distraction, he explains: "It's the natural evolution of caring for patients."

Just north of New York's bustling theater district lies Rozenberg's oasis. By combining high-tech cosmetic dental procedures with a soothing decor and enticing spa treatments, like an aromatherapy neck and jaw massage, the Rozenberg Dental Day Spa has made drill-dread a thing of the past. The concept behind the year-and-half-old spa came directly from Rozenberg's clients. "Patients wanted somewhere they could receive top treatments while relaxing." Not only will a visit with Dr.Rozenberg leave you with great teth and a feeling of calm, but you you'll collect a list of indispensable tricks for maintaining your new and improved smile: "Always drink dark-colored beverages through a straw; the less contact with teeth the whiter they'll remain," advises Rozenberg.

Whatever plagues your carefree grin, say ciao now. Invisalign, a series of clear, retainerlike tooth guards, straighten crooked teeth, are pretty much invisible, and can be taken off when you eat, brush, floss or have a hot date. Each "aligner" is worn for about two weeks, then replaced with a new one matching the changed pattern of the teeth. The treatment takes about as long as traditional braces do-between 6 and 18 months, and the cost is similar as well: around $4,000 to $6,000.
If a dull grin is your gripe, the latest in-office whitening option is halogen light. Teeth are covered with a peroxide solution, then the light is beamed onto them, explains Lana Rozenberg, owner of New York City's Rozenberg Dentak Day Spa. Halogen causes less irritation than laser whitening treatments. It's also cheaper-$600 to $1,000, while laser whitening starts at $1,000. For a cheap alternative, try Crest Whitestrips, available at drugstores. The strips, which contain hydrogen peroxide, are stuck to your teeth for half an hour, twice daily. They cost about $40 for a four week supply. After two weeks, you should see a two to three shade lightening that will last six months.

What causes bad dreath?
"If bad breath is chronic, see a dentist. Halitosis is often a sign of tooth decay or periodontal disease." For a temporary fix, try Colgate 2 in 1 toothpaste ($3; at drugstores) or Rembrandt Dazzling Fresh mouthwash ($4; at drugstores). "They won't fix the problem," says Lana Rozenberg, D.D.S., also of N.Y.C., "but they'll mask it."

Protect your teeth and gums with these stellar foods
Celery protects your teeth in two ways, says Lana Rozenberg,D.D.S., founder of Rozenberg Dental Day Spa in New York City. The extra chewing it requires produces plenty of saliva, which neutralizes the bacteria "Streptococcus mutans" that causes cavities. Additionaly, chomping on naturally abrasive foods massages gums and cleans between teeth. Try This: Snack on a handful of raw celery or carrots once a day.

BEAUTY BEAT. Dental rental: How to test-drive pricey pearlies.

It's your worst dental nightmare (well, short of being born British): You spend $10,000 plus on pearly-white laminates, and you end up with a smile that gets noticed - but for all the wrong reasons. "Sometimes people ask for a smile like Julia Roberts or Gisele," says Dr. Lana Rozenberg. "It could look great, but it could also be wrong for their face." The problem is that until recently, all one had to go on was a computer sketch that looked more like the Cheshire cat than any post-op image. But now dentists like Rozenberg are offering Trial Smile, a porcelain facsimile that looks like the real thing and lasts a couple of days. At a cost of $300 to $600, some people are even getting it for a big night out. All the better for sinking your teeth into an Atkins-approved tray of filet mignon.
